MJWC Announces Community Grant Recipients Though it’s part of a federal program, the COA needs $70,000 annually to maintain it, with the town only able to provide $15,000. Seniors are asked to make small donations for the rides if they can afford it, such as $4 for a trip to a local doctor or group trip to Trader Joe’s, but grants and private donations are crucial to keeping it going. An annual golf tournament and raffle, along with support from the Copeland Foundation, help the cause.
The late mother of Gov. Deval Patrick had been a van rider as well. Sullivan said the program is a help not just to the seniors, but their families and caregivers as well. The van transportation program was one of the recipients of a grant from the Milton Junior Woman’s Club. The MJWC gave $7,475 to nine local organizations recently. Much of the money raised by the group comes from its annual road race. “We’re glad our efforts can help support these wonderful programs, we wish we could do even more,’’ said Sheila Varela, one of the MJWC grant coordinators. Others sharing in this year’s grants were the Milton Young Musician’s Festival, the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, Milton Outdoor Classrooms, Milton Community Food Pantry, Milton Early Childhood Alliance, the town’s Gym Buddy and Special Olympics program, the library’s summer reading program and St. Agatha’s Service Plunge, which supports a luncheon for seniors at the COA.
