A Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

As the summer comes to an end, I would like to welcome everyone to a new year for the Milton Junior Women’s Club.  Last week we held our first business meeting to discuss future events.  I want to thank all who attended and presented ideas for the upcoming year.

Through the years, the MJWC has become a group that offers the women of Milton an opportunity to meet new people and socialize, show creativity and volunteer.  Our aim is not only to entertain members, but to give members an opportunity to make a difference in our community.  The Home Life committee has changed its name to better reflect the work that they do on behalf of MJWC.  Going forward, Home Life will be known as the “Community Service Committee”.  Our children will be invited to participate in the CSC’s events when it is suitable.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to foster the natural desire of children to assist others.

I personally have enjoyed sewing for years, and I have heard from many of you that with a little guidance you would like to put your sewing machines back in use.  I am happy to report that Venetia Corson has come forward to lead this club.  If you are interested, please let her know so that we may commence as soon as possible.

Our Opening Dinner will be held at Granite Links in Quincy on September 19th.  I look forward to celebrating the start of the 2006-2007 club year with those of you that have confirmed reservations.  At this time, there is a waitlist for dinner.  We are inviting all members to join us for the cocktail hour from 6:30 to 7:30

I feel fortunate to be a part of this club.  We have a strong base of women with a wide range of talents.  I encourage each member to become more involved and share your talents.  You will be impressed with the women of our town.  You will also be impressed with what you can accomplish working with these women.

Sincerely,

Eve

The Community Service Committee's goal is to assist the community through volunteerism and donations/drives. We will be supporting multiple causes throughout this year including The Milton Food Pantry, Council on Aging, Cradles to Crayons, Project Linus, and Children’s Hospital. We have a special focus on woman and children in our community and the greater Boston area. This year we will be attempting to heavily involve children of the club in our volunteer efforts. We also support club members by coordinating meals if there is a family crisis or a new baby. We welcome ideas and new participation! Please contact Kimberly if you want to become involved or if you have any questions.

We will be kicking off our food drive for the Milton Food Pantry in September and it will continue throughout November.  The food pantry is in need of instant coffee, hot/cold cereal, jelly, peanut butter, canned soups, canned fruits and canned vegetables. Donations can be brought to Community Service Committee homes or all MJWC events.  If your child would like to create a drop site for the food drive and collect around the neighborhood, it would be terrific! Last year, we had a tremendous response with many families becoming involved. The children of the club really enjoyed collecting donations and realized that they too can make a difference. Come join the fun! Please contact Kimberly or Meg to coordinate.  We will provide a flier for your child to distribute to friends/neighbors. Further details on our volunteer morning(s) at the Food Pantry will appear in the October Blueview.

We are looking for someone to coordinate meals for members who have had a baby or have experienced a family emergency.  This service has become invaluable to our members! If you are interested, please contact Kimberly.

Food & Wine Club

Venetia Corson

Julie O’Neill

Luisa Thomas

Lisa Rask Viola

School has just started, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the holidays!  Our first event is a Cooking Demonstration with popular Milton chef Connie Spiros.  The menu theme is holiday entertaining, and we have asked Connie to include a few recipes that are easy to make ahead or freeze.  Won’t it be great to get ready for a party and have a special dish ready ahead of time!  This fun event will be held at the home of Elaine Davis on Thursday, November 16th.  Events with Connie typically book quickly, so watch the newsletter next month for sign-up details.

Mark your calendar for these other Food and Wine events:

February 13th         Martinis and Manicures

March 30th             Wine Tasting with Keith Mills

May 6th                  Mother’s Day Brunch (including your children)

June 9th                  Grill Night

Knitting Club

Martina Connelly

This year the knitting club is inviting all members to join us as we knit infant hats to donate to babies in the NICU.  All you need to do is show up.  We will have needles and yarn available and Maureen Fallon will show you how to knit.  This is a great way to try knitting and a wonderful cause.  If you have never knitted before this is a good time to try!

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 27th at Martina Connelly’s house.  Please call Martina and let us know if you will be attending.

In addition to the monthly meetings, the club meets on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 11 at Starbucks.  Come join us for a cup and get help on any problems you might be having with your knitting project.

The Fall New and Prospective Members Cocktail Party has a tentative date of Wednesday, October 25th, at 7:30 PM, at the Woman’s Club located at 90 Reedsdale Road.  Look for more details soon.

Playgroups - If anyone is interested in participating in a playgroup organized through the MJWC, please let Rachel Schewe know.  These would be playgroups organized in groups of 4 to 6 kids that would meet at peoples’ houses as the groups decide.  She’ll try to match ages of kids and the days moms are available.  It will be a great way to meet new people and encourage new members to join.  If you are interested, contact her and let her know the name and age of the child(ren) and the days (M-F/am/pm) that you are available.

We would also like to add the names of members' children to the member directory.  To do this, we are asking that members send an updated list of children and their ages to miltonjwc@yahoo.com along with a notation of which, if any, children you would be interested in placing into a play group.

Pre-School Story Hour

Plans for the fall session of the story hour are underway.  The program will begin Tuesday, October 10, 2006 and run for a seven week session.  We will meet on Tuesdays at the Church of Our Saviour (11 Babcock St) from 9:30 a.m.-10: 30 a.m.  The program is open to children ages 3-5 years of age (must be 3 by October 1,2006-NO exceptions will be made).  The program is open to any Milton town resident.

Pre-registration for the program is necessary.  Registration will start on Friday, September 15th(no registrations will be accepted before this date).  To register a child, please call Amy Delaney.

We are still in need of parent volunteers to assist us with the Tuesday sessions, to serve as facilitators/ assistants.  If interested, contact Amy Delaney (above contact info).  We will also be meeting in advance in order to “prep” for the many activities and projects that the children will be doing during the session.  If anyone is interested in volunteering in this capacity, contact Amy.  We will be meeting on Tuesday, October 3rd at 7 p.m.

We would like to thank Tammy Vyas and Elaine Davis for the amazing job that they have done for the past years of a tremendous program for the children and the town service that they have provided.  We know that their shoes will be difficult to fill!  They continue to provide guidance as they pass on the torch!
