THE BLUEVIEW

President:  Laura Conway

A Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

We are off to a great start this year! And many thanks are necessary. First, a special thanks to the Home Life Committee, Beth Callahan, Brett Dickens, Meg Kaster, Mary Keally, Liz Papile, and Kimberly Zieselman, who did a fantastic job putting together the Ice Cream fund raising effort. Over $1000 will be donated to the Red Cross. Thanks also to all those who donated their time to help advertise, scoop ice cream and take pictures! I think everyone was proud to be a member of the club that day and it was terrific to see the children of our club so involved!

Opening Dinner was also a great success. And I think everyone would agree Alba’s Bar and Grill was a terrifict choice. And as Anne Thompson, president of the Woman’s Club, pointed out, it was a "very spirited group". Thanks to all who turned out! And thank you to Anne Thompson and Suzanne Hameker from the Woman’s Club for joining us, they added to the lively conversations.

Thanks also go out to Jane Busconi, Moira Connolly, Erin Donahoe, Suzanne Martin, Eve Nightingale, Tammy Vyas, and Kimberly Zieselman for volunteering their time at the Celebrate Milton event.

Finally, I would like to thank Liz Papile for opening her home to the board for this month’s meeting. A $350 donation was approved for the Monster Dash, benefiting the Foundation of Education. We also discussed a possible Casino Night with the Woman’s Club this winter, in addition to the Holiday Movie fundraiser being planned for December. In our efforts to support the Woman’s Club please check the Milton Shuffle! The Woman’s Club will be hosting their Annual Craft Fair on November 5th. Tables are available to rent.

This month, we have some great activities planned! The Book Club will be meeting on October 12th to discuss Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. The Knitting Club will meet on October 19th. On October 27th, Food and Wine is hosting a Martinis, Manicures and Monograms Event. Please be sure to RSVP early, this is sure to be a popular night! And the Home Life committee is starting its collection of donations for the Food Pantry. Please consider being a drop site in your neighborhood and let your children learn the benefits of community service!

As a reminder, dues are due November 1st. Please mail them to MJWC PO Box 344 in Milton.

Looking ahead, the New Member Wine and Cheese is November 3rd. If you know anyone who is interested in joining the club, please contact Christine Kelly or Rachel Schewe, so they can be invited. Programs will be hosting a Holiday Craft November 29th after Thanksgiving. And finally, the Christmas Party will be held on Tuesday, December 13th. Please put it on your calendar now, it is always a great social event.

Sincerely,

Laura

Please join us at our Next Meeting of Book Club

October 12th: Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, author of the DaVinci Code.
It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller.

We will be meeting at Jean Lang's home. Please RSVP to Jen FitzMaurice.

Or plan to join an Upcoming Meeting

November: My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
December: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger
January: Classic tbd
February: The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

A food drive for the Milton Food Pantry begins this month and continues through November 26th.  The food pantry is in need of instant coffee, hot/cold cereal, jelly, peanut butter, canned soups, canned fruits and canned vegetables.  If you and your children would like to create a neighborhood dropsite for donations, please contact Brett Dickens.  There is a flier at the end of the Blueview that you and your children can distribute to friends and neighbors.  The homelife committee will assist with pick up and drop off at the food pantry.  The following children are participating so far:  Jackie Bertram, The Papile children, Kevin Conway, Joanie Kaster.  We encourage more children to participate.

Our volunteer morning at the Food Pantry is Saturday November 26th.  If you are interested, please call Brett.

Kimberly Zieselman will be coordinating meals for those who have given birth or who have experienced an illness or crisis in their family.  Please contact Kimberly if you are interested in cooking or receiving meals.  Please look for details of our holiday drive in the November newsletter.  We will be participating in the Council on Aging Holiday party.  With oil prices so high, we will be raising funds for heating for seniors and needy families in Milton.

Please save the date for our annual New and Prospective Members’ Cocktail Party on Thursday, November 3rd, commencing at 7:30 p.m., at the home of Courtney Affanato.  This is a chance for prospective members to find out more about the Club as well as to meet new members who have already joined.  Committee Chairs should try to send a representative to be available to talk briefly about your part of the MJWC. RSVP to Christine Kelly if you are able to attend.

As we all know, moving to a new town can sometimes be very isolating. Please take a minute to think about inviting someone to the Cocktail Party whom you think might enjoy joining the Club and meeting some new friends. For example, a new neighbor, someone at your child's school, or a family member. Often people don't know about the Club, or feel shy about attending an event alone. Your initiation could be just the opportunity they have been looking for.  If you know anyone who is interested in joining, please call or email to let us know so we can send them an invitation
