A Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

It feels like I just put together February’s letter and here we are in March.  Spring is coming.  We have been given a taste of warm weather and I, for one, am looking forward to it.

To begin, I would like to thank Lisa Rask Viola for hosting this month's business meeting and to all who attended.  At this meeting, a final vote for the Community Grants was taken and unanimously approved as follows:

Milton Young Musician's Festival - $350

Milton Council On Aging - $1000

Blue Hills Trailside Museum - $800

St Agatha’s Service Plunge luncheon at COA $325

Milton Outdoor Classrooms - $500

Milton Food Pantry - $750

Milton Early Childhood Alliance - $1000

Milton Park and Recreation, Gym Buddies - $1500

Friends of the Milton Public Library - $1250

Thank you, again, to Sheila Varela and Laura Conway for all their hard work and thoughtful consideration of the grant applications.

Congratulations to Kristin Cain as she and her family welcome baby Rowan Spicer to the home.

Thank you, Elaine Davis, for all of your hard work coordinating the Toe Jam Puppet Band Concert.  I enjoyed watching the throng of children jump around and burn off some vacation energy.  The event was a lot of fun for all.  Thank you also to each member who donated food items and water for the concession table.  250 people came to our event, enabling us to raise $1000 for the Women’s Club, in support of their building.  Club members, we enjoy the use of the Women’s Club House at a discount, thanks to all the hard work put into the February fundraiser.

It has recently come to my attention that Amy Delaney is working by herself on the preschool Story Hour.  I am asking that any member who can assist Amy on Tuesday mornings please step forward.  The curriculum is set and already in motion, but a back up person is needed.  Please, if you have any interest in this project, please contact me or contact Amy directly.

March is set to be a month full of club activities.  Book Club will be meeting March 14th and will be discussing Catcher in the Rye.  The Membership Committee will be hosting a New Member Spring Party at the Milton Women’s Club House on Tuesday, March 20th at 7:30 PM.  All new and current members are invited to attend.   We would also like to extend an invitation to prospective members.  If there is a Milton resident that you would like to introduce to the Club, please extend an invitation to them.

March 30th, Food and Wine Committee is hosting a couple’s event.  The Wine Tasting will take place at the home of Martina Connelly.  Keith Mills of Esprit du Vin will be bringing his favorite picks.

March 22nd is a perfect opportunity for those of you who cannot make race day.  Come and assist with the envelope stuffing for the 30th annual Milton Road Race.  This is your only obligation to the club for the year!  We are ready for you to volunteer.  I cannot stress enough the importance of the race.  The ability to make Community Grant Donations is completely dependent upon the success of the Milton Road Race.  So, get ready to pitch in for a great event and to benefit our wonderful community.  If you have not yet signed up for a volunteer activity for the road race, please contact Susan Cantillon to find out what you can do.

Also in March we are assisting the Women’s Club and the Milton Players with a fundraiser that will assist each of them equally.  The show will be Broadway Around the World.  Tickets for this event are $25 each and may be purchased on line at http://www.miltonplayers.org or by calling 617-698-SHOW.  The Juniors have committed to three volunteers the night of the event and items for the silent auction.  Since most of our members are already involved with collecting item donations, we thought that collecting funds to purchase a gift certificate to The Soup Chick and funds to create a wine basket would be a welcome change.  If you would like to participate, please mail a check written out to MJWC, to my attention.  Please put “Broadway” on the comment line.  All members are encouraged to purchase tickets and enjoy the event!

May 5th is set as Milton Green Day.  The MJWC has been assigned Pope’s Pond form 9-12.  This volunteer opportunity involves simple clean up and improvement of trails and a planting bed.  Volunteers are welcome to bring children and other family members along to assist.  If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact Laura Conway.

AN UPDATE ON THE FASHION SHOW:  The Milton Woman's Club has decided to table the fashion show until this fall.

NOMINATIONS FOR 2006-2007 ARE OPEN.  If you are interested in holding an office or if you wish to nominate someone, please contact Laura Conway.  Please do not hesitate to get involved!
