THE BLUEVIEW
President: Eve Nightingale
Dear Friends,
It seems like just last week I
was sitting down to write the January letter. I hope that you have all
put this winter weather to good use. Between dodging the cruel winter
virus, I have enjoyed the ice skating at Cunningham Park with the
kids. No snow men so
far, but the weather man says we may be in for a surprise this week.
February marks the half way point of our active
year. There are many activities planned and many chances to get
involved!!
Our February Business Meeting was a moving event. I'd like to thank you Elaine Davis for hosting and putting this together for our group. David Waters spoke to us about Community Servings. Ladies, if you missed this talk, you missed hearing about an organization that is making a difference in our community on multiple layers. Community Servings delivers over 3000 meals per week to the homes of individuals with acute life threatening illnesses in towns from Lynne to Brockton. With a budget of only 3 million dollars per year, 97% of this budget goes directly to the client in the form of gourmet meals. These meals bring needed nutrition to the ill individuals and their families at no cost to them. Often, the care needed for these individuals consumes a families energy and finances. Whether it is a spouse who looses their job due to the demands of caring for a loved one, or a single parent that can no long access food for their family, www.servings.org feeds the entire family. The end result is giving the families the ability to stay together. Otherwise, the state would be obligated to step in and remove the children. This fear would often keep those in need from even seeking assistance further compounding the nutritional needs in the home. Thank you to all who turned out to hear about this organization and discuss the potential Community Grant recipients. We appreciate everyone's feedback. A special thanks to Sheila Varela and Laura Conway for compiling all the applications and thoughtfully making their recommendations which are as follows: Milton Young Musician's Festival - $350; Milton Council On Aging - $1000; Blue Hills Trailside Museum - $800; St Agatha’s Service Plunge luncheon at COA $325; Milton Outdoor Classrooms - $500; Milton Food Pantry - $750; Milton Early Childhood Alliance - $1000; Milton Park and Recreation, Gym Buddies - $1500; Friends of the Milton Public Library - $1250. If you would like to further discuss the recommendations, feel free to contact me.
Also discussed at the Business Meeting were two fundraisers for the spring. The Toe Jam Players will be coming to the Women’s Club House at 90 Reedsdale Rd on February 23rd at 10 AM. We will need volunteers to work in various capacities. There will be something to fit any time constraints. We will need people to work the door, bring items for the concession table and people to clean up. Anyone working the door is asked to arrive by 9:30 and anyone aiding with clean up will be done by noon. All members are encouraged to bring water, juice boxes, or single serving snack items to be sold at the snack table. Please contact Elaine Davis or contact myself to offer assistance.
Next, in March we are assisting the Women’s Club and the Milton Players with a fundraiser that will assist each of them equally. The show will be Broadway Around the World. Tickets for this event are $25 each and may be purchased on line at http://www.miltonplayers.org or by calling 617-698-SHOW. The Juniors have committed to two volunteers the night of the event and items for the silent auction. The best items come from those we know. If anyone is in a position to donate or access a donation of an item or service, please contact me. And all are encouraged to purchase tickets and enjoy the event!
In May, we will be hosting a Fashion Show in cooperation with both the Woman's Club and PM Club. Join on now and bring your ideas. We are looking for potential models and those who would like to work behind the scenes. We also are looking for suggestions for theme baskets to be raffled that day.
Finally, we have the 30th Annual Milton Road Race. Things are heating up and we are ready for you to volunteer. Expect to receive a phone call (if you haven't already) to find out what you can do. Our ability to make Community Grant Donations is completely dependent upon the success of the Milton Road Race. So, get ready to pitch in for a great event and to benefit our wonderful community. If you have not yet signed up for a volunteer activity for the road race, please contact Susan Cantillon to find out what you can do. There will be an envelope stuffing on March 22d, a perfect opportunity for those of you who cannot make race day. This is your only obligation to the club for the year!
Our next event is Couture,
Cocktails and Cures at the home of Julie O’Neill, on Tuesday,
February 13, at 7:30pm. Join us to be pampered, shop and socialize
with friends.
New
Member Party will be at
the MWC clubhouse on March
20 at 7:30. New and prospective members are welcome. New
and prospective members will be asked to bring a bottle of wine. Board members
are encouraged to come to show support and bring an appetizer or dessert.
See you at the next event!
Fondly,
Eve
