A Letter from the Co-Presidents

Greetings,

On behalf of the newly elected committee boards, we wish to welcome you all back to what promises to be another successful year filled with fellowship, fun and most importantly community service. We promise to do our best to be of service to the MJWC as we are honored to have this opportunity. We would be remiss in not recognizing the tremendous work, effort and dedication by Elaine Davis, Jennifer Wood and the entire committee boards for last year’s success. We would also like to start the year off by thanking the many committee members, new and seasoned, who are diligently working behind the scenes volunteering their time and energy to make this year another successful one. You go girls!

Our first business meeting was held on Sept. 16th at Beth Plunkett's house where we hammered out all the details of our many upcoming events. This year is going to be action-packed and fun-filled! We have been scrambling to get all of our ducks (aka committees) in order so we apologize for the late start. We are finally up and running and rearing to go. So, let’s get going already!

Our first fundraiser, organized by Mary Beth Grant and Amy Masferrer, is the Pumpkin Sale, planned for October 19th at the town common and gazebo from 10-2pm.  Last year's sale was a huge success and we are > sure this year will be no different! However, to ensure the success of the sale we are asking for volunteers as well as material donations. To volunteer your time, or offer a donation such as a baked good, craft donation, a wagon/child sized wheelbarrow or your husband’s (for the heavy lifting and then you can have him back), please contact Mary Beth Grant or Amy Masferrer ASAP.

Our next big member event will be New and Prospective Members Social. If you know anyone in your circle of friends, neighborhood or child's school who may be interested in learning more about the MJWC please join us on Thursday, October 16th at 7:30 p.m. at the Milton Woman's Clubhouse located at 90 Reedsdale Road to welcome potential and new members.  We encourage all new and "seasoned" members to attend and bring a friend or neighbor to introduce her to the MJWC, and all the exciting new programs and events planned for this year! We ask all members to bring a bottle of wine. If you know anyone who is interested in joining the MJWC, please contact Sheila Paolucci (jsp350@comcast.net) as soon as possible so that we may send an invitation.  Kindly respond to the evite for this event by Wednesday, October 8th.

There are so many events going on this month that our calendar is bursting with activity. Story Hour is ready to get started Oct 8th. The Book Club  already has their faces nestled in some juicy books. The Community Service Committee is hard at work planning the Dove Drive, Milton Community Food Pantry Drive as well as coordinating many other opportunities for you to stuff bags and donate much needed items to charitable and worthy causes.

Coming in November, we have a Holiday Photo Event on the 1st with our very own Kimberly Zieselman. How lucky are we to have the chance to have our holiday cards ready for the mailbox in early December!?! You will be the envy of friends and neighbors alike! We also have our much loved and anticipated Toy Box Night on the 9th. Invites for these events will be sent out shortly. Please RSVP promptly as these two events traditionally sell out quickly.

In order for all of our events to run smoothly and truly impact the people that they are intended to benefit, we need you to give what you can; be it an hour of volunteering at an event, joining a committee or donating to one of our many drives. We are all so busy with our own lives that we often say; “next year I will get more involved ". We are hoping that this year will be your “next year” and that you will step up and help us make this year a year to remember.

On that note, it’s that time again to kindly ask you to forward your annual dues of $40 to the MJWC. You can send your check to P.O Box 344 Milton MA, Pay Pal through Big Tent or drop a check off at any MJWC function (such as the New Members Social detailed above) on or before November 1, 2008. Thank you! We are also encouraging you all to sign up for Big Tent if you haven’t’ already done so. We are planning on encouraging/pushing all members to utilize the many benefits (calendar of events, contact lists, classified ads) that the site has to offer the MJWC.

Lastly, we are always looking for feedback and/or ideas on how to better serve the community and improve the operations of the club, so please do not hesitate to share them with us.

 Best wishes,

Aliesha and Beth

Note Regarding Our New Treasurer:

The new treasurer for the 2008-09 year is Kathy Keyes. Kathy is employed full time and is also co-chair of the Road Race Committee.  As a result, free time is a bit limited between MJW activities and family responsibilities.  In an effort to address the club members’ need for reimbursements, Kathy will set aside time once a month to cut checks for members' expenses, on or about the 15th of each month.  Please email Kathy at KLKeyes@msn.com for an expense form to be filled out when submitting your receipts. Receipts and expense forms should be enclosed in an envelope> and dropped off at her home at 30 High St., inside the porch in the wicker mail basket. Your check will be left for you in your envelop in the same basket, with an email to you letting you know that the check is there for you to collect.  Urgent matters will of course be addressed as timely as possible. Urgent will be defined by the co-presidents.

DRIVE TO BENEFIT DOVE, INC. :

DOVE is a non-profit organization in Quincy that provides crucial services to victims of domestic violence and their children.  In addition to an emergency shelter, DOVE operates a 24-hour hotline and provides community education on the topic of domestic violence.   We are doing a drive to benefit the children of their clients for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Last year, we received a $100 grant from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Massachusetts to provide birthday party supplies for children residing at the shelter.  We are using the $100 to put together a birthday bag filled with party supplies.  We also hope to include gift cards so that they can purchase cakes.  The Committee will solicit these from local grocers on their behalf.

HOW YOU CAN HELP….

The shelter at DOVE is in desperate need of craft projects and art supplies for the children residing there.  You can help DOVE in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month by donating these items.

Suggested items are:

1)  Complete craft projects, i.e. the kind they sell at Michaels, which include foam pieces, pom poms, or the like

2)  Get with a friend and create your own art project complete with supplies

3)  Crayons, paints, play doh, etc.

ANY DONATIONS CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE HOMES OF THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 14

-Lori Humphreys 34 Hoy Terrace (off of Pleasant, close to Cunningham and Collicot schools—leave in front by side door)

-Audrey Gavin  34 Russell St.

-Jeannine Reardon 49 Grafton Ave. (near East Milton square --good drop off for rainy days as there is a covered front porch)

LOOKING AHEAD:  We will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Milton Community Food Pantry again this year.  Look for more information in the October newsletter.  Also, mark your calendars for October 24 at 9:30 for our annual coffee hour /food drop off event at 9:30 for our annual coffee hour /food drop off event at the home of Martina Connelly.

We, on the Programs Committee, are excited to offer four upcoming events.  The dates for the following are still being worked out, Life Gate Acupuncture, Cedar Grove, and a photography event with KZ Images. The annual Toy Box Event is set for Sunday, November 9th.  Friends, wine, food and TOYS!!!

The Toy Box will be hosting a private shopping party just for the MJWC members. The Toy Box will offer 20% off savings on all toys and of course complimentary gift wrapping and free home delivery. This is always a great event that fills up quickly. Keep your eyes out for the sign up email.

The Programs Committee is working hard to get these exciting events up and running for our members.  All members will receive an Evite, at which time you will need to respond.  Each event has limited availability and member’s space must be reserved in advance at the time of the Evite.

Road Race Committee

Eve Nightingale – 617-696-5370 – e_nightingale@yahoo.com

Kathy Keyes – 617 -696-9170 - KLKeyes@msn.com

The Road Race Committee is excited to have three returning committee members this year whose amazing effort resulted in $25,000 in cash donations from the 2008 Milton Road Race! We are seeking new committee members for the 2008-09 year to join up and help out. More hands means less work. So, if you haven't signed on to a committee yet, or even if you have signed up for another committee and have a desire to do more, we could use your help.

This is the club's largest fundraising event of the year and it cannot take off on the right foot with only three members. Please review your calendar this year. We ask that you come join us and help out. It's like planning a large party!

You'll find that this is a perfect committee to join in that you'll get to meet many club members, as well as town officials and local business owners. We will be posting our meeting dates on Big Tent so stay tuned. Meetings are typically held once a month at Starbucks from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Remember, the Road Race is the only activity required of all its members, whether you choose to volunteer as a committee helper, or to sit on the committee. Proceeds go directly to the club's Scholarship Program and Grants Program. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your fresh ideas! Please contact co-chairs Eve Nightingale at (617) 696-5370, or Kathy Keyes at (617) 696-9170 for more information.
