A Letter from the Co-Presidents

Hello Everyone!

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend. Whether you have children or not, you still nurture the spirits of everyone around you and negotiate "personalities" at home and at work every day. Hope you got a chance to relax and take a moment for yourselves.

We are busily making preparations for the last events of the year. It is hard to believe that May is here and the summer is right around the corner. This year was an amazing year for us to be your leaders. We can't say we were "fearless", but we were certainly pleasantly surprised by how great it felt to embrace the challenges. All of you have continually stepped up and supported us and that has meant to world to us.

What a minute, this is starting to sound like a farewell speech and this IS the May newsletter. We still have a last burst of activity before closing dinner! There are more great things coming up so let's get to it.

First, the Anniversary Tea on April 28th was a fabulous success. Thanks to everyone who offered their teapots for the flower arrangements and thanks to Amy Masferrer and Mary Beth Grant who did the arrangements. Thank you to all the members that made dishes. We were also so grateful to have so many Juniors in attendance, not only did we have our recent active members, but we were honored to some past presidents: Robin O'Neil, Karen Gregg, Penny Ryan, Mary McLaughlin and Patty Bulman. As a club, we received our 75th anniversary certificate from some of the GDWC representatives and the Milton Woman's Club had a wonderful time celebrating their 110th with us. They were thrilled we were there and were deeply touched.

A few things coming up

1)      The Mother/Child Etiquette Tea is coming up this Sunday, May 18th. A few spots remain open. Don't miss the opportunity to share an afternoon with your child, enjoy some special treats and have manners reviewed in a fun setting! If your kids tune you out when you ask them to chew with their mouths closed, perhaps it's time to have help from a pro! Marianne Cohen of Mannersmith will be there to work with children ages 4 - 8, addressing everything from table manners to phone etiquette. The event starts at 3 pm in the Great Hall of the First Congregational Church/The Centre School. Contact Lisa Viola at Lraskviola@comcast.net or 617-696-7103. It sounds like what every mother is looking for!

2)      Thayer Nursery Program is set for May 15th at 7pm to "Get your spring on." We regret to say that it is full right now, but no worries, Thayer has been so great to us. We will definitely try to make more of these types of events available throughout the fall and winter. In fact, we have a few special events to add for next year!

3)      Road Race is right around the corner on June 10th. Please contact Eve Nightingale at e_nightingale@yahoo.com or Jenny Kunkel jennyandkent@earthlink.net to request your assignments. Please note: We will be having a meeting the Sunday before the event (6/8) in the afternoon. There will be literature available that day and also the day of the race addressing frequently asked questions. There will be designated people with walkie talkies. Not to mention, we will meet up after the race is over and share a beer or glass of wine at the Club House to bask in all of our volunteerism glory! We really do rock! Anyway, we can't do this alone. We need everyone to pull together. We are in terrific shape right now and we are well on our way to a wonderful event. All we need are a few more pieces in place. Thanks in advance for making road race such a priority. We know this is going to be a great race this year.

The month of May will be gone in a heartbeat, so we want to remind you that scholarships will be reviewed and awarded to graduating high school seniors who live in Milton at the end of this month. Thanks to the scholarship committee for taking the time to read all 22 applications. It is hard work, but we know the committee considers it a labor of love and that is inspirational.

Lastly, Grill Night will be happening on June 21st and Closing Dinner will be happening on June 26th. Please be on the lookout for more information in future correspondences.

Have a great month. Stay calm and before you know it we will all be sitting in a lawn chair sipping our favorite social beverage. Based on the weather today, we may be wearing a sweater and wrapped in a blanket!

See you all soon and thanks for everything.

Best wishes,

Elaine and Jennifer

P.S. A note from Our Treasurer:

Please send all expenses to Eileen Cakouros by June 25. The financial books close on June 30, so anything receive after that date will be paid in September.

Road Race

Eve Nightingale - 617-696-5370 - e_nightingale@yahoo.com

Prior to, or day of, that is the question.  Please respond to me directly at  bruceve98@comcast.net and let me know if you have not already.  All members, who will be running in this event, will need to volunteer for a task that will take place prior to the day of the race.  While I am excited to be moving along smoothly, we need the assistance of all of our members for this event to run smoothly.  If you have already assisted us with envelope stuffing or some other task - THANK YOU!  Your commitment is complete.  However, road race is a fun event for all involved.  Please feel free to assist again.  If you will be out of town or unable to commit to the date of the Road Race event, please take a look at the items listed below, so that you may choose a task prior to the actual road race.

Bag Stuffing June 8

Early Registration June 9

Food/water pick up ongoing as we¬İlead up to the event

Your energy, time and assistance are appreciated.  Without the success of this event, the MJWC cannot give the nearly $15,000 a year in scholarships and grant money back to the town of Milton.   As far as race day community outreach and festive events, we have confirmed many product donations.  While we continue to accept sponsorship, the t-shirts and banners have gone to print!  To date, we have been focused on bringing in cash.  Going forward, while we will still be accepting cash, we will be shifting our focus to the end of race celebration and family festivities.  We have confirmed hot dogs, pizza, fruit, and various water companies.  We still have plenty of room, and would welcome other establishments to benefit from exposure in this exciting event.  If any member has access to a company that would appreciate this opportunity, please contact me.

To date our total cash is at $15,800, with $14,400 coming from vendors, $600 from friends and $800 from registered runners.    We have many returning vendors and activities.  Please take a look at the attached list of sponsors and donors.   Show your appreciation to these groups by thanking them for their continued support of our event as you patronize their businesses.  Many of these businesses donate because they feel that MJWC members and residents of Milton are their valued customers.  A personal thank you from you will make this evident.  And, everyone enjoys getting a thank you!

We are currently compiling a list of "commonly asked questions" for the road race - and you can all help!  Were you present at last year's road race?  What were your questions, or what questions did you hear from runners?  If you have not been to the Milton Road Race, what questions do you have?  Please forward your questions to me.  We will be posting Q&A at the race, as well as divide them up to appropriate focus areas for quick reference.

The next Road Race Meeting will be May 15th at Starbucks, 7PM

All assistance is welcome and appreciated.  We look forward to working with each of you!
