Happy New Year to all and welcome to your first newsletter of 2008. We hope your holidays were relaxing and fun-filled ñ ours were. We think that anytime you get to stay in your pajamas a majority of the time, thatís good livin.
Our annual meeting was held last week with an excellent turnout to discuss all that is going on and listen to Kathy Fagan speak of what motivates and inspires her to do great things for her community, her family and herself. We enjoyed listening as she shared some personal anecdotes about her life and work. She in turn listened and learned about the club and told us she was quite impressed by all we do for the community and each other. Itís always nice to be validated, right?
Speaking of all that we do, donít forget about our Comedy Night Fundraiser on Saturday, January 26. Have you bought your tickets yet? Doors open at 7:30 and the show begins as 8:30. The Fundraising Committee is working tirelessly to transform the Womanís Club house into a fabulous, glittering night club. Be sure not to miss out. We need lots of volunteers to help set up, serve food and drinks, clean up and break down on Sunday morning. And donít forget the Toe Jams Concert on Thursday, February 21st at 3:00 p.m. We also need people to help with food and beverages for this event.
And if that werenít enough, Community Service has lots of other volunteer and donation opportunities for us to get involved in right now for Rosieís Place, Cradles to Crayons, the Council on Aging, the Milton Food Pantry and the Milton Residentís Fund. Please see their blurb below for all the details on each worthy endeavor.
There are a few more important dates you should keep in mind. The next Road Race Committee meeting will be held this Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Starbucks in East Milton. All willing and able bodied participants are encouraged to attend ñ remember, the Road Race is the jewel in our crown. In order for us to be as generous as we would like to be with our scholarships and community grants, our road race has to continue to be the great success it has been for many years. And that doesnít happen unless everyone pitches in somehow. OkayÖthatís enough preaching. Donít forget to sign on for Big Tent ñ our big launch is this week. And mark down Saturday, March 29 ñ Food and Wine is coordinating a fun Beer Tasting. We should all be off our diets by then, right?
Lastly, we would like to tell you that 2008 marks the 110th year anniversary of the Milton Womanís Club and we have discussed possibly having a tea of some sort in the spring. We feel itís important and merits recognition in some way. If you have any other ideas on how to acknowledge this important year, please let us know.
Well, since the ìnewî new yearís resolution is to have no new yearís resolution ñ letís just say, ëhooray for us and for all we do and will continue to do.î We wish you all the best for a bright and joyful 2008.
Elaine and Jennifer

Tuesday, June 10, 2008, is the Road Race, our largest fundraiser of the year. Road Race Committee selections are past due. Please respond to me directly at e_nightingale@yahoo.com and let me know if you will be assisting on race day or prior to race day. Without the success of this event, the MJWC can not give the nearly $15,000 a year in scholarships and grant money back to the town of Milton. We need the assistance of all of our members for this event to run smoothly. For those of you that have already given me your selection, I thank you. I encourage all interested members to run in the race this year. Please keep in mind; running in the race does not qualify as volunteering for the race. If running, you will need to sign on for assisting prior to race day. Volunteering for this event is our only commitment as a member of the MJWC. It is well respected throughout the Boston area for its value and integrity. We feel fortunate that we have several experienced members on the committee. Whether it is the day of the race, or preparation leading up to the event, we will be looking to all of you to support in any way you can. Please see the attached calendar listing time frames for all tasks.
Our first meeting of 2008 will be January 16th at Starbuckís in East Milton Square, from 7 to 9 PM. Please join us. We will be firming up the benefits of Presenting Sponsor, as well as proofing all items going to print within the month.
We will be sorting and stuffing envelopes on February 11th 7:00-10:00 PM at the Womanís Club House. Envelope stuffing is a great opportunity to assist with the Road Race. This is always a very fun and social event.
Do you have a business that you would like to see share the banner with the Milton Road Race? There is still time! We have had businesses express interest in being a Presenting Sponsor. Once the specifics of Presenting Sponsor are firm, we will be able to go back to these businesses for finalization. Full sponsorship includes naming rights for the 2008 race and mention of their business in every written article. Beginning in January, we will be asking for members to contact sponsors from previous years. We will need many members to make this personal contact efficient. I would like to ask all members to look around at all people within their families and business circles. Please speak to us if you have any ideas for corporate matching or corporate sponsorship. There are so many businesses out there that would benefit from exposure in this exciting event. The best way to get these businesses involved is through a personal connection. We are also looking for families/businesses to sponsor water tables and purchase mile markers. It is our hope that these changes will give the sponsors more positive exposure and ìbang for their buckî. More details will follow and each member making contact with businesses will be given a script and detailed information as to what sponsorship money will gain for the business.
All assistance is welcome and appreciated. We look forward to working with each of you!

****After a busy and successful fall, we look forward to another exciting couple of months. Here are just a few of the things we have planned so far:
Next month we are going to kick off our womenís clothing drive. Be on the lookout for specifics in the February newsletter. In the meantime, if youíre cleaning out your closets, be sure to bag up any womenís clothing items you may have. We plan to collect and donate business appropriate accessories to Dress for Success and clothing items to Rosieís Place.
Mark your calendars! We are doing a MJWC volunteer day at Cradles to Crayons on Saturday March 8 from 1-4. More information will follow.
Although we donít have a formal food drive in the spring, we are instituting a new policy of setting up a collection box for the food pantry at all major MJWC events, including the Road Race. The Food Pantry is often not as well stocked during the spring and summer, and we want to do all we can to help.
*** On another note, we applied for and received a $100 domestic violence grant from the General Federation of Womenís Clubs of Massachusetts. We plan on using this towards a program to benefit DOVE in the fall.

We are currently working on spring events
for the club. We have two exciting opportunities in mind. The first is to
visit the studio of a personal trainer who specializes in working with woman
who are pregnant and have small children. This trainer offers Mommy and Me
classes, mom classes and children classes, all of which many of us can really
use! We are trying to set this up for the end of February, beginning of
March.
The second program is a possible event at Thayer Nursery working with spring
flowers, greens, and planters. Everyone had so much fun at the holiday
event, so we want to try to add something fresh for spring! We are trying
to set this event up for the end of April, beginning of May.
More information will follow. Hope you can join us!
