A Letter from the Co-Presidents

Hello Everyone,

December is here.  Let the chaos begin!  It may be hectic, but it is a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends.  We, as a club, have a lot to celebrate, too! First, our Holiday party is this Wednesday, 12/12.  We hope you can come by to toast to friendship and participate in a slightly aggressive, but festive Yankee swap! Jennifer and I are so smitten by our gifts and we want to win them back!   Seriously, we know things are busy, but sneak over for a bit.  We would love to see you!

Please note:  If you are still interested in participating in the ìGift Cards for Teens Program.î  Please contact Kimberly Zieselman at kzieselman@comcast.net.  She will assign you a teen and you can bring a gift card to the party or to her home.

Our next great thing to celebrate is our announcement that ì Big Tent is coming!î That sounded a little like Oprah, didnít it?  The committees are working on putting their information online and then we hope to send invitations to all the members so that they can get online by next week!  Donít worry if you havenít paid your dues.  There will be a payment option on the site so that you can pay with a credit card and then log on to the site.  If you would still like to pay the old fashioned way, please feel free to send a check to the P.O. Box listed above.  Once it goes through membership, Betsy Crowley, betsy.crowley@hotmail.com, will be able to log you on to the site. This is going to be a great way to communicate.  The site is very user friendly and it will be so much easier to find out what is going on with the club.  No more searching for the last newsletter, no more wondering who is running what.  No more searching for addresses and phone numbers.  It will be a completely secure and private way for members to communicate. NOTE: Newsletters will continue to go out once a month.

Continuing on with the celebration, the MJWC is proud to announce we are moving forward to be the next home for the ìMilton Cares With Bears Program.î  This program supplies teddy bears to the Milton Police Department, who, in turn, carry them in their police cruisers. If the police are called to investigate a stressful 911 call where a child is involved, an officer can offer a teddy bear as a form of comfort. Dick Russell has been running this program for years and can no longer continue with this work.  He has asked that we carry on with this project and the MJWC Board has voted ìyesî to take on this very important work.  What a wonderful gift to give the Milton Police, Milton families and our entire community.  What an amazing spirit of giving our group has!

Speaking of spirit, the Program Committee had their annual Thayer Nursery Event.  This event has always been alive with holiday cheer.  This year was no exception.  It was a great opportunity to get creative and make something special to display at home or give as a gift to a friend.  This is a highlight every year!

Lastly just two small pieces of business:

1)      The Road Race Committee has been moving forward to get organized for 2008. It would be great if you could, please contact Eve Nightingale with your assignment requests.  It will help us to see where we have plenty of people and where we are short.  Also, if you work for a company that might be willing to sponsor the event in some way, let Eve know, e_nightinggale@yahoo.com. She can fill you in on how sponsorship is going to work this year.   Whether it is actual sponsorship or some sort of corporate matching program, it really helps us to make this event successful for the whole Milton Community. Thanks in advance for your support.

2)      Comedy Night Fundraiser ñ Saturday, 1/26.  Be sure to mark your calendars. The fundraising committee is, again, channeling Martha Stewart to put on an upscale, fabulous evening for all of us. How do you top the Pumpkin Sale, right?  We would love for all of you to talk it up as much as possible and if you would, please reach out to friends to sell tickets. Please note: Selling tickets is not mandatory, but we would love to make this a dazzling success.  Please contact Mary Beth Grant, mbhg@comcast.net, or Annmarie Loughnane, amlough@verizon.net, for information on tickets or for ways to support the preparation of the event.

So, there you have it ladies.  We have a lot to be grateful for and a lot to celebrate. Here is a toast to all of you.  You are the ones that make this club so special. There is a lot to look forward to in 2008 and we are glad to share it with you.

Have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes from us for a prosperous new year.

Elaine and Jennifer

Road Race

Eve Nightingale ñ 617-696-5370 ñ e_nightingale@yahoo.com

Tuesday, June 10, 2008, is the Road Race, our largest fundraiser of the year.  Without the success of this event, the MJWC can not give the nearly $15,000 a year in scholarships and grant money back to the town of Milton.  We are very excited about getting started this year, and we have some great ideas about how to support everyone¼s busy schedules.

Beginning in January, we will be asking for members to contact sponsors from previous years.  We will need many members to make this personal contact efficient.  I would like to ask all members to look around at all people within their families and business circles.  Please speak to us if you have any ideas for corporate matching or corporate sponsorship.  There are so many businesses out there that would benefit from exposure in this exciting event.  The best way to get these businesses involved is through a personal connection.   In particular, we are looking for a business to be the presenting sponsor.  $3500 of a companyís advertising budget will buy them full sponsorship in the race.  Full sponsorship includes naming rights for the 2008 race and mention of their business in every written article.  Do you have a business that you would like to see share the banner with the Milton Road Race?  We are also looking for families/businesses to sponsor water tables and purchase mile markers.  It is our hope that these changes will give the sponsors more positive exposure and ìbang for their buckî.  More details will follow and each member making contact with businesses will be given a script and detailed information as to what sponsorship money will gain for the business.

Road Race Committee selections are due.   For those of you that have already given me your selection, I thank you.  I have included the list below of members who have contacted me via email.  A number of members have spoken with me, and given their requests in passing.  I apologize, but, not all of you have been captured on this list.  If you are not listed below, please respond to me directly at e_nightingale@yahoo.com with your choice of committee for the road race.  Volunteering for this event is our only commitment as a member of the MJWC.  It is well respected throughout the Boston area for its value and integrity.  We feel fortunate that we have several experienced members on the committee. Whether it is the day of the race, or preparation leading up to the event, we will be looking to all of you to support in any way you can.  Please see the attached calendar listing time frames for all tasks.

To assist you with making your choice, please keep the following in mind.  If you can not commit to race day, plan on choosing an activity that takes place prior.  Prior activities for race support, sponsor contact (January), envelope stuffing (February), PR (April and May), bag stuffing (June), and supply pick up/drop off (June).  Race Day we are looking for registration, finish line and general nuts and bolts.  Also, please note the following Road Race Committee DescriptionsAll assistance is welcome and appreciated.  We look forward to working with each of you!

Road Race Committee Descriptions

MILTON ROAD RACE COMMITTEE

Each year, the MJWC hosts the Annual Milton Road Race. This year, the 31st Annual Road Race will be held on Tuesday, June 10th, 2007. The proceeds help support club initiatives, including funding community grants and scholarships. The road race is an exciting event and a great way for members to become more involved in the club.  We typically have one meeting per month and would appreciate a two-year commitment. Please contact Eve Nightingale for more information.

Chair: Eve Nightingale 617-696-5370

COMMUNICATIONS AND PROMOTIONS

Coordinate all written communications PR and promotion of the road race.  This includes the editing of solicitation letter and existing fliers; the placement of all ads, photos, and articles in local and regional papers as well as different running publications prior to the race; and communication of race results.

SPONSORS

Develop and manage a sponsor contact list, comprised of previous sponsors and potential new corporate/business sponsors; coordinate sponsor mailings; make follow-up telephone calls and visits to potential sponsors.  This is a great way to be involved from home, in advance of the road race.

NUTS AND BOLTS

Work within the community to solicit vendors for donations for race day, including food/water, kidís activities, DJ, etc.  On day of race, coordinate volunteers who partake in the following: help vendors with set-up at race start/finish, oversee food, water and cups, water stations, medals and laurel wreaths, chutes and splits, mile markers and clean up.

T-SHIRTS AND RACE BAGS

Manage all elements associated with road race t-shirts, including the compilation of sponsor names and logos at print deadline; buy, design and coordinate the hanging of road race banners; organize race bag stuffing and distribution.

REGISTRATIONS AND APPLICATIONS

Manage all registrations on day of race as well as on Sunday prior to event.  Order race numbers and coordinate race number distribution to all race entrants; manage tracking of applications and fees, and communication of entrant information to Spitler.  This is a great way to participate on race day.

CHILDRENíS FUN

Organize and manage kidís fun run and activities. On day of race, direct volunteers who work the fun run and kidís activities.

HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE:

Believe it or not some kids in Milton aren't going to have anything to open on Christmas

unless we help!

MJWC is partnering with the Milton Residents Fund to provide holiday gifts for needy children living in Milton.

We have been asked to once again provide gift cards for those kids on their list ages 13-16 years old.  Please help us reach our goal of providing each young teen on the Fundís list with a gift card again this year!

Any interested member will be given the age and gender of a child (or several children) in need and asked to purchase him/her a gift card (suggested gift amount is $25, but it is up to each donor to decide.)   Whatever you can do to help will be much appreciated!!

Gift Cards should be wrapped and tagged with the childís gender, age and anonymous family number (which you will be given when you volunteer).  Feel free to add candy or other small items to your gift package if you like.    Gifts are due by December 12th, and may either be dropped at Kimberly  Zieselman's house at 52 Ridge Rd, or brought to the MJWC holiday party on December 12th.

Some suggested Gift Card Ideas:  Macyís, Target, Old Navy, Borders, AMC Movies.

HINT: The North Quincy Stop and Shop sells all of the above store brand gift cards (and much more!) in various $ amounts, making it simple to pick up while doing your regular grocery shopping!

Please contact Kimberly Zieselman to be assigned a child
