A Letter from the Co-Presidents

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to April in New England ñ it is currently freezing rain out.  We thought March was to leave like a lamb ñ oh, well... the warm weather will get here eventually.  March was certainly a busy month for the club with lots of activity.  Kudos to everyone who worked so hard to plan the many outings and events last month ñ your efforts are greatly appreciated.  And thanks to all who participated!

Food and Wine hosted a successful supper-making evening at Letís Dish in Norwell, followed by a terrific, beautifully organized Beer Tasting at the Womanís Clubhouse.  Who knew there was so much interesting information to learn about beer?  All the Sam Adams products were excellent, as well as the food pairings to go along with them!  Membership had fun mingling and bowling with some of our new members at Boston Bowl.  Community Service took some tots to celebrate St. Patrickís Day at the Senior Center here in Milton that got some nice coverage in the newspaper, followed by an outing to Rosieís Place where members prepared and served lunch.  Programs hosted a fun-filled Psychic Night at Ariane Fosterís home with two psychics providing readings.  And as Community Grants finished up their work allocating funds to so many worthy local causes, we got a chance to present one of the checks personally to some very grateful recipients at Cooperative Elder Services.  The senior citizens who attend this program were overjoyed to be getting a new convection oven on which to do their baking using this money from the MJWC.  They asked us to pass on their gratitude to all our members.

As you know, a majority of the funds we are able to give back to the community come from proceeds from our Road Race (Tuesday, June 10th).  So again, if you still do not know how you can help make this day the huge success that it always is, please call Eve so she can give you a job!  There will be a meeting for members on Sunday, June 8th to answer all your questions on how the road race works and where we need coverage.  If you have already contacted Eve, thatís great.  You all have been so supportive and we are off to a strong start.

We have a big anniversary celebration coming up! This year is the 75th anniversary of the Milton Junior Womanís Club.  Please mark your calendars for Sunday, April 27th from 2:00 ñ 4:00 pm. We will be commemorating this event with an afternoon tea at the Womanís Clubhouse.  If you did not receive an e-vite to this event, please let us know.  We will be celebrating with the Milton Womanís Club and the PM Club.  Our club has offered to provide food (tea sandwiches and light snacks) for this day.  We ask that if you are able to make something or buy something for this event, please let us know.  And we certainly hope you can attend.

Another important date to tell you about is Milton Green Day on Saturday, May 3rd from 9 am-noon (the rain date is May 4th).  Grab a pair of gloves and a rake and join your friends and neighbors for a morning of spring cleaning!  Our organization has agreed to participate in this important event. The MJWC has been asked to focus on Pope's Pondlocated on Blue Hills Parkway across from the high school entrance.  There will be signage there.  Last year, over 500 residents joined the effort - raking leaves, planting flowers and picking up trash and debris that had accumulated over the winter. The Milton Department of Public Works will provide trash and leaf bags, and all volunteers will receive a free Milton Green Day t-shirt. We are also invited to a Milton Green Day kickoff at Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and muffins.  If you can help, please contact us (Elaine at 617-283-6546 or Jennifer at 617-698-6241).  This is a great way to involve our children in a meaningful way. Please join us as we celebrate the beauty and community spirit of Milton

Lastly, please be thinking about what you may like to do in our club for next year as we will have openings on our Board and for Committee Chairs.  We will provide you with more information next month.  We definitely need volunteers for Pre-school Story Hour.  It is a very easy thing to do during the day if you already have little ones.

Also, donít forget that Community Service is collecting toiletry items for Motherís Day gift bags to be given to clients of the food pantry.

And donít worry; we know the sunshine is just around the corner!  It will find us ñ it always does!

Jennifer and Elaine

Road Race

Eve Nightingale ñ 617-696-5370 ñ e_nightingale@yahoo.com

Prior to, or day of, that is the question.  Please respond to me directly at bruceve98@comcast.net and let me know if you have not already.  All members, who will be running in this event, will need to volunteer for a task that will take place prior to the day of the race.  While I am excited to be moving along smoothly, we need the assistance of all of our members for this event to run smoothly.

I would like to thank all of the members who have already stepped up to their volunteer commitment.  Your energy, time and assistance are appreciated.  This month was focused on sponsorship.  We have been able to make contact with many of our vendors and the money is coming in.  At the time of this writing, we are at $10,500 in cash donations!  This is very exciting!  However, we are still a distance from our goal of $25,000.  Without the success of this event, the MJWC cannot give the nearly $15,000 a year in scholarships and grant money back to the town of Milton.   As far as race day community outreach and festive events, we have confirmed many product donations.

There is some bad news, however.  Outback has told us that they are unable to participate this year.  While this is unfortunate, this opens the door for another establishment to benefit from exposure in this exciting event if they step in.  We have some ideas, but, if any member has access to a company that would appreciate this opportunity, please contact me.

We have many returning vendors and activities.  The Toy Box has signed on to man an activity station for children and DJ SuzieQ will be making a return appearance.  Both of these groups were favorites at last year's event.  We have a jumping house secured for race day.  Also, the Fruit Center, Fitness Unlimited, Desmond Queally Plumbing and Heating, Atlantic Insurance and Milton Chiropractic have all generously donated cash to our event.  Please show your appreciation to these groups by thanking them for their continued support of our event as you patronize their businesses.  Many of these businesses donate because they feel that MJWC members and residents of Milton are their valued customers.  A personal thank you from you will make this evident.  And, everyone enjoys getting a thank you!

We are currently compiling a list of "commonly asked questions" for the road race - and you can all help!  Were you present at last year's road race?  What were your questions, or what questions did you hear from runners?  If you have not been to the Milton Road Race, what questions do you have?  Please forward your questions to me.  We will be posting Q&A at the race, as well as divide them up to appropriate focus areas for quick reference.

The next Road Race Meeting will be April 10th at Starbucks, 7PM

All assistance is welcome and appreciated.  We look forward to working with each of you!

MOTHERíS DAY TOILETRY GIFT BAGS:  APRIL 7-APRIL 30

As our final activity of the year, we will be collecting toiletry items for Motherís Day gift bags to be given to clients of the food pantry.  Toiletry items such as bath soap, body lotion, shower and bath gel, and hair products are greatly appreciated.  Please no hotel brands.   Help us make Motherís Day special for Milton moms in need!

Items can be dropped off at the homes of :

Jane Busconi: 60 Hoy Terrace (Leave at front door)

Natalie Fitzgerald: 319 Reedsdale Road (Leave on front porch)

As you may have noticed, weíve been quite busy over the past few months.  Thanks to all who contributed to our Womenís Clothing DriveAs a result of your generosity we collected about 15 bags of clothing for Rosieís Place and accessories for Dressed for Success.

Also, thanks to our members who volunteered at the Council on Aging, Rosieís Place, and Cradles to Crayons. Our St. Patrickís Day visit to the Council on Aging with our little ones brought smiles to the faces of Milton seniors.  At Rosieís Place we helped to prepare, serve, and clean up lunch for approximately 100 homeless women.  Finally, as a result of our efforts at Cradles to Crayons, 27 Massachusetts kids will get clothing, toys and other needed items.  When we get together, we can really make a difference!

The beer tasting was a huge success!  Many thanks to Laura Boynton and Sam Adams for their help with the event, and all who attended.  Congrats to raffle winner Julie O'Neill who took home the Sam Adams pint glasses, and Eileen Cakouros who won the grand prize bottle of Sam Adams Utopias.

Our next event is a gift for yourself and your child.  Plan to attend our Tea for Two on Sunday May 18, from 3:00-4:30pm.  The tea will be held in the Great Hall of First Congregational Church / The Centre School.  Enjoy a special afternoon with tea and refreshments, including an etiquette lesson for your child.  Marianne Cohen of Mannersmith will present a program for children ages 4-8, addressing common scenarios where we'd all like to see our children flourish:  introductions, table manners, and phone etiquette.  Who knows, even we moms might learn something new!

Cost for the event is $25 per child, and is limited to 20 children.  Attendees will also be asked to prepare an item for the tea -- a chance to enjoy some time together with your child in the kitchen.  RSVP with your child's name and age to Lisa Viola at LRaskViola@comcast.net or 617-696-7103.  Once you RSVP, your child will receive an invitation to the event that they can proudly present to you as a Mother's Day gift.
