A Letter from the Co-Presidents

Hello Everyone,

After a busy September, we are off to an amazing start this year.  Being your Co-Presidents has been such a pleasure for both of us and in September, we had a great time starting to connect with everyone. Your enthusiasm is unbelievable and knowing all of you, this great energy will carry over into October.  We shall do our best to make this year fun and rewarding.

We have so many great things to tell you about. First, we had a wonderful turnout for our opening cocktail party at Granite Links.  People got the chance to catch up with each other and we all got to talk about things we want to do together during the coming year.  Any opportunity to be among friends, have a glass of wine and “recapture our identities,” is a good time.  Oops, there we go, talking about ourselves….Seriously, it was a really nice time and a great way to kick-off our new year.  We regret that everyone could not be there. Please know that you were definitely missed.  We all promise to make it up to you at the New Members Social. It is right around the corner!

Speaking of our New Members Social….The Membership Committee has been working diligently on the preparations and everything is set for Thursday, October 18th, at 7:30 p.m.  The event will be held at the Woman’s Club House on Reedsdale Road.  Please try to join us and bring a friend or neighbor.  It is a tradition to have a member, from each committee, say a little something about their group, so it would be great to have at least one person from each committee there that night.  The MJWC board will supply the appetizers.  We ask that members bring a bottle of wine or beverage of choice. It is always appreciated.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Moving on to other big news….We are very excited about our upcoming fall fundraiser coordinated by the newly formed Fundraising Steering Committee.  The Pumpkin Sale and Family Fun Event will be held on Sunday, October 14th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Town Hall gazebo.  We are still looking for volunteers to help set up, sell pumpkins, organize the arts & crafts and close up shop. We won’t need people to be there all day. If you could give, one half hour or an hour of your time, it would be very supportive.  If you are not going to be around that day, you might consider donating some baked goods or a gallon of cider to be sold that day.    There are many ways to help make this a successful event.  Contact Mary Beth Grant or Amy Masferrer for more details.  We hope everyone can come and take part in the festivities.  It proves to be a lot of fun for the children and the adults, as well.

At this time, we want to thank the many members that helped with “Celebrate Milton” which was held on Sunday, September 30th.   We made a very strong showing and generated a lot of interest.  Several people stopped by our table to learn more about the club. It is a nice feeling to see how well recognized we are in the Milton community.   Many thanks to Rachel Schewe, Annmarie Loughnane, Amy Masferrer, Martina Connelly, Laura Conway, Barbara Johnson, Jeannine Reardon, Jane Busconi, Eve Nightingale and Ariane Foster for setting up, manning the table and selling raffle tickets.

Special thanks to Jane Busconi, Lori Humphreys and the rest of the Community Service Committee for putting together a beautiful spa basket which we raffled off at the table to benefit D.O.V.E.  We were able to raise $131.  We are proud to be able to support this organization.  Just a reminder, we are still collecting items for the Drive to Benefit D.O.V.E., Inc.  Please see the Community Service section in this newsletter for more information on what items you can donate and where you can drop these items off.  The D.O.V.E. Drive ends 10/12.

On another community service note, we are happy to report that a $350 donation was approved for the Monster Dash, benefiting the Foundation of Education.  Thanks to Lisa Viola for expediting that for us.

Finally, don’t forget to schedule haircuts and salon appointments in the next two weeks. The Program Committee will be hosting a fabulous opportunity for families to be photographed by one of the top photographers in Boston on Sunday, 10/21, at the Town Hall gazebo.  For all of you that wait too long to get your cards going, this is a dream come true.  What could be easier?

There are many more things going on this month and next.  Pre-School Story Hour is in full swing, Book Club is reading with thoughtful introspection and Knitting Club is getting ready for winter.  We know life is so busy sometimes, but come and join us when you can.

Sincerely,

Jennifer and Elaine

P.S. For those of you who haven’t gotten to take care of this, the dues deadline is November 1st.

Road Race

Eve Nightingale

Tuesday, June 10, 2008, is the Road Race, our largest fundraiser of the year.  We are very excited about getting started this year, and we have some really great ideas about how to support everyone¹s busy schedules.  Please join us on Sunday, October 28th for a potluck dinner and brainstorming meeting at the home of Elaine Davis.  We will share a meal, break into small groups and create a workable schedule that everyone will feel good about.

Here are the details:

·         Date:  Sunday, October 28th

·         Time:  5:30 7:30 pm (In time to help get the kids to bed)

·         Place:  Elaine Davis¹ house

Volunteering for this event is our only commitment as members of the MJWC.  As you know, this Road Race is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.  It is well respected throughout the Boston area for its value and integrity.  It is our hope; you can let us know in November what you would like to do to support this event.  We feel fortunate that we have several experienced members on the committee. Whether it is the day of the race, or preparation leading up to the event, we will be looking to all of you to support in any way you can.   We have some great ideas for making this event manageable for everyone involved.   Sign-up sheets and detailed information for each group, along with a calendar will be available at the New Member¹s event.  Let us know when you are busiest, and we can tell you what committee would be best suited to your time constraints.  All assistance is welcome and appreciated.

We look forward to working with each of you!

Please contact Eve Nightingale.

The Milton Early Childhood Alliance seeks volunteers to deliver Welcome Baby baskets to Milton families with new babies.  This is a small time commitment that will really brighten the day of young families.  These baskets provide hand-made baby blankets made and donated by area Brownie and Girl Scout troops, an early literacy DVD for parents, a baby board book, a baby outfit and various baby items, and tons of local resources and information!
